Have you been diagnosed with PCOS (now known as PMOS)? If so, you may have to deal with a wide range of symptoms. Some of those raise serious health concerns, while others are just annoying! For example, you may have coarse, dark hair in places where it normally would not grow — that can make you feel self-conscious! Instead of getting stuck in an endless cycle of waxing or shaving, it is worth your time to consider other hair management options, including laser hair removal.
Why Does PCOS/PMOS Cause Extra Hair?
PCOS/PMOS is a hormonal disorder that affects biological females. If you have this condition, your body produces more androgens (male hormones) than it should. While this imbalance can cause issues throughout the body, one of the most noticeable symptoms is hair in areas of the body where biological females normally have little or no hair. This includes the chin, upper lip, chest, abdomen, neck, and beyond.
Is Laser Hair Removal Effective for PCOS/PMOS Hair?
Laser hair removal works by using specific wavelengths of light to damage hair follicles when they are in an active growth stage. As a result, those follicles may stop working. Or, at the very least, hair growth becomes slower, and the hairs are thinner, lighter, and easier to manage.
Treatment is effective for even very coarse and dark hair. It can be used on virtually all areas of the body, including sensitive areas like the upper lip and bikini line.
What to Expect with Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is not an “instant fix” for unwanted hair. In fact, many people with PCOS/PMOS need to attend more sessions than individuals without hormonal challenges in order to achieve results. The entire course of treatment may take several months. Still, the vast majority of patients with a hormonal imbalance are very satisfied with the results of their laser hair removal. They find that they have greater confidence and spend less time plucking, shaving, waxing, etc.
Also, keep in mind that while laser hair removal is great for aesthetic purposes, it will not do anything for the underlying hormonal imbalance that causes unwanted hair. It is still important to work with your medical team to care for your hormonal health.
